Artist's Description

Sugar shack (French: cabane à sucre) captured close to St. Jovite, Quebec (Canada) in autumn 2013. Camera Nikon D600, 1/30 sec at f/20, ISO-160, focal length 32 mm, lens Nikkor 28-300 mm. RAW file edited in LightRoom.

This kind of small cabin is a semi-commercial establishment, prominent mainly in Eastern Canada, where sap collected from sugar maple trees is boiled into famous Canadian maple syrup. Sugar shacks are a tradition since they were introduced to New France (area colonized by France in North America) in 16th century. Their purpose was the production of warming and delicious syrup for trade or sale, and for personal use during the cold months of Winter. Today most of the old sugar cabins can be found on properties belonging to the first settler families.

About Jola Martysz

Jola Martysz

I'm a passionate photographer, and I like to photograph anything and everything that catches my eye. Born in Poland (Sopot), was living over 25 years in Germany, and then sailing for 7 years in the Pacific, finally settled in Quebec, Canada. Because of my travels, I had the opportunity to capture a host of images from a different parts of the globe. From 2010 until now all images are shot in RAW format. Hope you enjoy the works I have uploaded. Please feel free to give me your comments and suggestions as I believe that is an excellent way to improve our skills and also learn new ones. I am happy to create Calendars using any of my pictures of your choosing. You can contact me directly for contract work or customization, or if you have...
